The following two blog posts summarize my takeaways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These two posts are only about the <em>early portion <\/em>of the visitor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153funnel\u00e2\u20ac\u009d: the first few actions that users take on a given web site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/onboarding_funnel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"onboarding_funnel\" src=\"http:\/\/han-web.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/onboarding_funnel-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(Image Credit: Modified from an image originally from webdesignseo.com)<\/em><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Six Basic Actions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I analyzed what my colleagues and I subjectively consider the best sites for getting new users to stick. I was surprised to find two things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>All the possible user actions presented on these sites fit neatly into six categories<\/li>\n<li>Most sites tended to focus on only one or two of these actions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/onboarding_6actions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"onboarding_6actions\" src=\"http:\/\/han-web.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/onboarding_6actions-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Use<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some sites like Aardvark, Google\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recent acquisition, get users to stick by just getting them to use the full product.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Aardvark<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aardvark simply gets visitors to start using it:\u00c2\u00a0No detailed how-to guide. No explanation of how it works. Delayed registration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It just gets visitors to use it, in this case, by asking a question:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-63\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/aardvark1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63\" title=\"aardvark\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/aardvark1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/aardvark1.jpg 733w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/aardvark1-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Sixty One<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">TheSixtyOne.com is perhaps the most impressive example of a great \u00e2\u20ac\u0153use\u00e2\u20ac\u009d action. This Pandora-like streaming radio site presents a simple, elegant splash screen:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-65\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65\" title=\"sixtyone1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone11.jpg 777w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone11-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re reading the three lines of text, it caches the audio stream and the beautiful background image so that when you click \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcready\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 it instantly begins playing music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No sign up. No instructions. Not even a choice for what type of music you like. It just starts playing music,\u00c2\u00a0immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only after using the service, do you discover features which require registration, and more complex features which require explanation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-66\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-66\" title=\"sixtyone2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone21.jpg 684w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sixtyone21-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Register<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For other sites, registration is the most crucial barrier in converting visitors to new customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Mint<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mint has done an incredible job at making registration painless and easy. Amazingly, with Mint, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s possible for a user to link all his financial accounts to Mint in under five minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-67\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/mint1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-67\" title=\"mint\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/mint1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/mint1.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/mint1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>OkCupid<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">OkCupid limits each registration page to exactly three questions to keep visitors from feeling overwhelmed. Pre-populating answers is another great way to invite visitors to chug through the registration process. It can reduce the number of clicks necessary for a critical demographic of your visitors, in this case, single women. But it can also be psychologically compelling for other users to correct information about them that is incorrect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-70\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-70\" title=\"okcupid1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid12.jpg 790w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid12-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additionally, OkCupid dedicates half of the screen real estate to keeping users entertained with humorous or interesting facts as they register.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-71\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71\" title=\"okcupid2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid21.jpg 727w, http:\/\/www.han.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/okcupid21-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There is a fairly simple taxonomy of user actions: Use, Register, Learn, Guide, Trial, and Contact.<\/li>\n<li>Getting new users to stick involves two difficult things: a)\u00c2\u00a0Knowing which of these actions is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153sticky\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for your users and b)\u00c2\u00a0Incentivizing users to perform those actions<\/li>\n<li>This is highly dependent on the nature of your product and who your users are. For example, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Register\u00e2\u20ac\u009d would be ineffective for TheSixtyOne when visitors likely have little patience to register for yet another online radio service.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think about your web site as a series of pages that visitors see.
